My family came here ever year as we traveled from all over to decorate the Carson Grave yard in wolf county. We would meet here and I can remember all the men packing coolers after cooler of homecooked food and drinks down all those stair where we would all enjoy a wonderful dinnner in the cool watching the waterfalls. All the kids has all the right to explore all we wanted and explore we did, Never ever saw a Snake, Thank God. !! I love this place

That's really too bad to hear about the shrine. I usually stop in about every year or so when I'm in the area. I'm not catholic or anything. I just find the place interesting. You're right, though, it's a sad state of affairs when people have nothing better to do that break and burn things. Many people just don't comprehend how special places are due to their uniqueness.

Thanks for the valuable info. I stopped by the shrine yesterday (4/5/10) to introduce it to my boyfriend, and was sadly dissappointed at its condition. The mobile home (in your pics) has burned to the ground, but not cleaned up. The WELCOME sign is still missing... it seemed my entire conversation regarding the shrine repeatedly included the words "it used to be...."
It is VERY sad that vandals cannot leave-well-enough-alone...
i wont bother to "show off" the shrine to anyone again, unless i visit it first to determine whether it has been brought back up to "viewing standard"... right now its more of an embarrassment.
What a shame...

In earlier times, in the 60's and 70's Broke Legs Falls was a minor tourist attraction just off U.S 460 between Frenchburg and Ezel, KY. In the mid-70's the state park system was in the process of turning it into a roadside park, but the local vandals caused damgae, thus ending the stat's mission. I haven't seen it for over 30 years, but would like to return one day.

My deceased husband , myself and a number of friends used to picnic here when we were teenagers. It is a beautiful place. We used to go there in the 60's. Shows how old I am!

Years ago my great aunt and uncle, Ella and Vernon Wells, owned this place. While growing up I spent time exploring, enjoying, contemplating the mysteries of life! There were also well worn foot trails, caves, a natural spring, etc. It was easy to believe it was my own secret, mystical, private hideaway. I still go back occasionally and am always overcome by nostalgia from the past. My cousin sold the land to the state who was supposed to renovate and re-open, but I have seen little progress. And that is fine with me! I can still think of it as my personal other worldly domain and enjoy the untouched beauty. Thank you so very much for the pictures

Sorry to hear about your fishies dying again. But at least you got some nice stock photos out of it that will hopefully pay for more fish to die. :P
